Uruguayan international, Luis Suarez, was charged yesterday by the English FA for use of an offensive slur, "negrito," with Patrice Evra of Manchester United. He has been fined £40,000 and banned for 8 games pending an appeal.
Teammates of Suarez at "La Celeste" of Uruguay fiercely defended him. They cited cultural differences, use of language and that Evra broke an unwritten law of football.
Team captain, Diego Lugano:
"No lo puedo creer. Es un gran error que se está cometiendo. Es obvio que Inglaterra hay un problema de racismo que ellos intentan erradicar, y está bien, pero este fallo no tiene argumentos sólidos. Luis es una víctima. No entiendo como un jugador como Evra puede hacer esto. Está rompiendo todos los códigos del fútbol. Todos sabemos la clase de persona que es Luis y los valores que tiene. Estamos todos muy dolidos. Cuando un compañero nuestro está sufriendo, todos estamos sufriendo. Ahora solo queda apoyarlo y estar con él".

Alvaro "Tata" Gonzalez:
"Como todos quienes conocemos a Luis sabemos que si realizó este comentario no fue despectivo, sino que nosotros los uruguayos y más aún en el fútbol usamos términos que pueden ser mal interpretados por personas de otros lugares", comentó el jugador quien además aseguro que "no por esto se lo puede catalogar al uruguayo como racista".
El Tata comentó en su web que en Uruguay hay un importante porcentaje de gente afrodescendiente y explicó que "en muchos casos nos referimos a algún amigo de color como "el negro" de manera afectiva".
"Quizás terminamos pagando por ingresar en otras culturas, tal vez más cerradas y que seguramente sí hayan discriminado en algún momento a Evra para que se sienta tan atacado en esta situación"."All of us who are acquainted with Luis know that this commentary wasn't made to be scornful. El jugador celeste aseguró además Luis es "una persona muy respetuosa" y que no logra entender "la decisión que se ha tomado y sobre todo la postura que ha adoptado el propio jugador". "El apoyo total a Luis en este momento, sabemos la clase de persona que es y también que ha sido rehén de una diferencia cultural".

Eso lo va a llevar a redoblar esfuerzos no solo por el fútbol inglés sino también por la selección uruguaya. Lo que más lo deja tranquilo es el apoyo que ha recibido del club, de la afición, del capitán del equipo y de todos sus compañeros".
"Por último queríamos agradecer el apoyo que ha recibido de la sociedad uruguayo y de los medios de prensa... "Nos parece desmedida".
A su vez, señaló que es muy difícil para los abogados con una formación latina que se pueda condenar a alguien sólo por la acusación sin demás pruebas. "Nos parece desde el punto de vista jurídico un despropósito".
"Suárez "siente mucho dolor" por sanción y apelará."
